After 10 years of closure and safety works, the BUCO DEL PIOMBO reopened in summer 2024. It is an impressive Jurassic cavern, comparable in size to Milan Cathedral, with an entrance height of 45 metres and a width of 38 metres.
It is located in the municipality of Erba, but it can also be reached from Alpe del Vicerè in the municipality of Albavilla.
It boasts over 400 metres of tunnels and corridors that have not yet been fully examined, where palaeontological remains of the Ursus Spelaeus have been discovered, together with flints and tools dating back to the Palaeolithic era, left by ancient nomadic hunters.
The structures inside the hall are dated around the year 500. The cave over the centuries was a strategic refuge during invasions and historical conflicts. According to local legends, in 1160 the warriors of Erba took refuge here after their victory in the Battle of Carcano against Barbarossa.
The cave has been a popular destination for scholars and holidaymakers since 1800, with illustrious visits such as that of Queen Margherita of Savoy. A place rich in history, mystery and natural beauty, ideal for geology, archaeology and natural history enthusiasts
